35 The Switch

The subject line is a phrase my (old) companion Elder Richards and I made up. It's basically the ability to switch from speaking English to Spanish or vice versa. I'm getting better at it, but I still find myself slipping in Spanish words when speaking English. LANGUAGE IS SO CRAZY!!

Funny story: every Sunday we teach an English class to the members of the branch here in Navojoa, and one 15 year old girl asked why we say the word "sick" for something that means cool (example: that basketball game was sick!...or your shirt is so cool...sick!) and I couldn't explain why.....just weird English phrases!

These past few weeks have been really good. Elder Richards and I have been straight grinding on the bikes trying to hit the outskirts of Navojoa. I'm talking like 30 min bike rides....so basically saying I'll be Lance Armstrong by the end of my time here is an understatement. Hopefully my legs will be hecka jacked.

Anyways, we have been blessed with yet another baptism! We baptized this huge dude named Vladimir. He was a reference from a member and he is so cool! He told us he feels something when we are with him, something like a "happiness or peace that I haven't felt in a long time." Lemme tell you....there's nothing cooler than hearing that as a missionary! He was baptized a couple of Saturdays ago so that'll be cool to follow up and see his faith grow!

Another funny story: I'm pretty sure I mentioned in my last email about the dogs here. How they aren't friendly, and they always run and chase after us trying to kill us...fun times.
Anyways, one night Elder Richards and I were biking to an appointment down this street and it was pitch black. It was about 8pm and I was a bit tired so I was just tryin' to grind until the end of the night. Then, outta NO WHERE, I hear a ton of barking and it was getting louder and louder and then I realized these 3 huge German Shepards were chasing me. Nothing could have woken me up faster and scared me more than that. It reminded me of Hall-O-Scream or the Ashberry Farm haunted mazes where it's pitch black and you can't see the people jumping out and scaring you....except it's EVERY NIGHT...gotta be alert at all times!

Spiritual thought: Just wanted to share one of my favorite scriptures in Proverbs, it says

Proverbs 3:5–6

5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

He will literally direct our path when we put our trust in HIM. It may take some humility, courage, even faith. But there is nothing better than having the guidance from our Almighty God.

One last update, we had transfers and I will be staying here in Navojoa for at least another 6 weeks. Sadly, Elder Richards has left me, but I have received....ANOTHER AMERICAN!!! I totally thought I was gonna get a Latino but I'm getting Elder Judd instead. He is from Boise Idaho and I have known him for a good hour! Haha! He seems super cool so I'm excited to work with him.

Til next time! Love you all!
Elder Gregory
